LPAC: Friday reminders (7/10/15)
Tomorrow’s the last home meet of the season, against the Oaktree Sharks (who won Champs last year)…time to show them our PENGUIN POWER!
Just a few reminders before the weekend:
- All LPAC swimmers must check in with the coaches no later than 6:30 am.
- If your child is ill Saturday morning, please call or text Coach Scott: 408-613-5126.
- Meet entries and volunteer assignments have been posted to the Oaktree @ LPAC page of the website.
- IMPORTANT: At home meets, we really need everyone to stay and help clean up after the meet is over. High school swimmers need to help put the lounge chairs away. Parents, if you are signed up for the Clean-Up crew, please report for duty before the end of the meet and stay until everything is put away. We still need extra volunteers for clean-up and kitchen clean-up shifts. We ask all families to stay to help pick up garbage and be sure we leave the pool area cleaner than we found it. If everyone pitches in, we can get done a lot faster. Thank you!
- Be sure to turn in your Banquet order forms and Swim-a-Thon pledges if you haven’t already done so.
- We will have some extra LPAC merchandise for sale (including kids’ crewneck sweatshirts and ladies’ tank tops) at the announcer’s table during the meet.
- If you don’t already have an LPAC swim cap, you can purchase one for $10. All swimmers should wear LPAC caps at Champs.
- During the meet, we will be selling $1 raffle tickets to win a premium parking spot at Champs! All proceeds benefit LPAC.
- High school swimmers should plan to meet at the pool at 4:30 pm on Saturday to carpool to the Beach Trip. The cost is $8 per person. We still need more parent drivers to help out, as kids cannot drive themselves to this event. Please RSVP to Nancy Keslin. Remember to dress in layers, as it will get cool at night!
- Next week is Spirit Week, with fun dress-up themes and snacks each day at practice:
- Multicultural Monday: Dress in clothes from other countries and cultures
- Teddy Bear Tuesday: Come to practice in your PJs and bring your favorite stuffed animal
- Wow You’re Bright Western Wednesday: Dress in neon clothes and/or western wear
- Thuperhero Thursday: Dress like your favorite superhero
- Black and White Penguin Friday: Dress like a penguin!
LPAC: Weekly update (7/6/15)
Dear Penguins and Parents:
Hope you all had a fun Fourth of July weekend! It was wet and wild on the Raft Trip for sure. Now we’re down to just two weeks left in the swim team season…time sure goes by fast when you’re having fun!
***IMPORTANT: WILL YOU BE AT OAKTREE AND CHAMPS?***
The coaches are filling out entries for the Oaktree meet and Champs right now, so it’s very important to let them know if your swimmer will be missing any part of either meet. If you don’t see your name on the lists below, please send email ASAP to both coaches@swimlpac.org and volunteers@swimlpac.org.
Swimmers missing all or part of the Oaktree meet (7/11): Kayla Fewkes, Alexis Galindo, Rachel Hoge, Mackenzie Keslin, Claire Lombardi, Matthew Lombardi, Shauna Pickett
Swimmers missing all or part of Champs (7/18): Jake Fuss, Izabella Hasse, Jazmine Hasse, Claire Lombardi, Matthew Lombardi, Hannah Waldron, Alexa Wise, Christian Wise
ROOT BEER FLOAT SOCIAL AND POOL PARTY TODAY!
Come out to the pool today (Monday, July 6) from 3:15 to 6:00 pm to enjoy refreshing root beer floats and fun times with your swim team friends! We could use some extra parents to scoop and serve if you’re available this afternoon to help out.

We still have several open shifts for Champs that we need to fill:
- 3rd shift Clerk Marshal

Please send email to volunteers@swimlpac.org if you can help out with one or more of these jobs. If we don’t hear from anyone today, we’ll have to assign shifts, as we need to submit our volunteer assignments by tomorrow.

Don’t forget to turn in forms and payment for:
- Banquet Meal Orders: Swimmers eat for free, but we still need you to turn in the form to confirm the number of meals. Extra meals for parents and siblings can also be purchased.

Hope you all have a happy Fourth of July weekend! There is no meet on Saturday (7/4), but here are a few end-of-week reminders:
- Orders for Champs Program Ads are due no later than Monday morning (7/6). Don’t miss this chance to support your favorite penguin(s)…100% of the proceeds benefit LPAC!
- Be sure to also turn in your Banquet Order form. Swimmers eat for free, but we still need you to turn in a form confirming the number of meals.
- If you’re going on the Raft Trip, be sure to bring signed waiver forms.
- If your swimmer is going to miss any part of the Oaktree meet or Champs, we need to know NOW. If your child is not already listed below, please send email to both coaches@swimlpac.org and volunteers@swimlpac.org.

Swimmers missing all or part of Champs (7/18): Claire Lombardi, Matthew Lombardi, Izabella Hasse, Jazmine Hasse
LPAC: Weekly Update (6/29/15)
Dear Penguins and Parents:
Congratulations on another dual meet victory this weekend! Our mighty Penguins shellacked the Sharks and defeated Silver Creek by a score of 122.35 to 100.48. And we all had a great time celebrating afterwards during the Overnighter. Thanks again to the Board members and other parents who helped out all night to make this a fun and safe event for everyone. Hope everyone was able to get some sleep and catch up on Sunday!
CONGRATULATIONS (AGAIN) DANI!
Daniela Fasan shaved a little more time off her I.M. at Silver Creek, breaking her own 13-14 Girls record with a new time of 1:06.73. Way to go Dani!
MISSING RIBBONS?
If you are missing ribbons from the Silver Creek meet, please contact Nancy Keslin at (408) 224-6408.
THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE
With only three weeks left in the season, it’s more important than ever to come to swim practice every day if you can. The coaches are working closely with swimmers on specific stroke techniques and issues they’ve observed during meets. We will be having practice on Friday (July 3), so dress in red, white, and blue to show off your penguin patriotic spirit!
ONLY TWO MORE MEETS TO GO!
We have our last dual meet at home against Oaktree on July 11 and then Champs in Morgan Hill on July 18. If your swimmer will be missing any part of either meet, the coaches and volunteer coordinators need to know ASAP, as meet entries and volunteer assignments have to be submitted early. Please send email to coaches@swimlpac.org and volunteers@swimlpac.org.
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR CHAMPS
We still need to fill a few more volunteer shifts at Champs on Saturday, July 18:
- 3rd shift Clerk Marshal
- 3rd shift Event Board
- 4th shift Clerk of the Course (2 spots)
- 4th shift Deck Marshal
- 4th shift Event Board
Champs is such a big meet, we really need every family to pitch in. Families with multiple swimmers may be asked to volunteer for more than one shift. Please send email to volunteers@swimlpac.org if you can help out with one or more of these jobs!
RAFT TRIP ON SATURDAY
Hopefully you have already signed up for the Raft Trip this Saturday (July 4). If not, you can call or text Chad Seps (408-887-3267) and see if there are any spots still available. Everyone should plan to be at the Knights Ferry parking lot no later than 9:00 am.
Everyone who goes down the river must have a signed waiver form. Parents, if you are not going on the trip with your kids, you need to be sure to print one out and sign it ahead of time. Waiver forms, a map, and other information are posted to the Raft Trip page of the website. Remember to bring lunch in a cooler, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes (not flip-flops). And don’t bring anything with you on the boat that shouldn’t get wet…because EVERYTHING gets wet!
END-OF-SEASON FUN EVENTS
We’ve still got several fun team events to fit in before the end of the season! Please mark these dates on your calendar and see the website for additional details.
- Root Beer Float Social: On Monday, July 6, all age groups are invited to a Root Beer Float Social and pool party at the Los Paseos Pool from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. We’ll serve up the floats around 4:15 pm. The cost is $1 for Association members and $2 for non-members. Parents and siblings are also welcome to attend.
- Rockin’ Jump: All swimmers in the 9-11 age group are invited to Rockin’ Jump on Wednesday, July 8 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. The cost is $12 per child.
- Beach Trip: The evening of Saturday, July 11 is the annual LPAC Beach Trip for the high-school swimmers and their parents. Please send email to Nancy Keslin if you are planning to attend. We need lots of parent drivers to help out, as kids are not allowed to drive themselves to this event.
- Spirit Night: All LPAC swimmers and their families should attend Spirit Night on Thursday, July 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. We’ll elect next year’s Board members and Swimmer Reps, share info about Champs, make posters, give out Swim-a-Thon prizes, and then watch the year-end slide show. There is no cost for this event.
- Spaghetti Dinner: On the night before Champs, all swimmers ages 13-18 are invited to the Spaghetti dinner from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.
- Banquet: The end-of-season Awards Banquet will be on Saturday, July 19 from 4:30 to 8:00 pm. Dinner will be catered by Buca di Beppo. All swimmers eat for free, but we need you to turn in an order form so we know how many penguin mouths we have to feed. Parents and siblings can also order meals for an additional cost. The order form is attached to this email and is also posted to the Banquet page of the team website. Orders and payment must be turned in by Wednesday, July 8.
GET THOSE PLEDGES!

LPAC: Friday reminders (6/26/15)
A few quick reminders before the weekend:
- Check the Silver Creek meet page of the website for a map, meet entries, volunteer assignments, and other important information about the meet on Saturday.
- Plan to park in the lot at Silver Creek Elementary School (5000 Farnsworth Drive) and walk to the pool. Space is very tight at Silver Creek, so please plan to share EZ-Ups with other families.
- All swimmers need to check in with the coaches no later than 7:20 am. Please remember to check OUT with the coaches if you leave before the end of the meet.
- If your swimmer is ill, please call or text Coach Scott: 408-613-5126.
- Parents, please check in with the volunteer coordinators when you arrive, even if you are not currently assigned a shift. We need extra helpers because Silver Creek has so many lanes!
- Remember to bring paperwork and your checkbook, either to the meet or to the Overnighter, to sign up for Champs Meals, Champs Program Ads, Champs T-Shirts, and the Raft Trip. Saturday is the last day to turn in all those forms!
- Judy Seps will be collecting money at the meet for gifts to give to our six coaches.
- Check-in for the Overnighter will start at 6:00 pm.
GO PENGUINS!
LPAC Reminder: Champs Orders and Raft Trip forms due Saturday!
This is just a quick reminder to fire up your printer and fill out some important forms before Saturday.
First, if your kids are attending the Overnighter, you need to have a permission slip with your emergency contact information. The cost is $15 per child.
You also need to turn in orders for Champs Meals and/or Champs Program Ads by this Saturday. These are both important ways we raise funds to help defray the cost of Champs.
Finally, Saturday is also the last day to turn in Raft Trip forms.
Click on the links below to download and print all the forms:
Please fill out them out NOW and be sure you turn them in with payment no later than Saturday when you check in at the Overnighter! If you’d like, you can write one check (payable to “LPAC”) for all of these items.
LPAC: Weekly update (6/22/15)
Dear Penguins and Parents:
Way to go! After losing our dual meet against Montevideo last year, we came back and crushed them in 2015. LPAC won Saturday’s meet by a score of 118.93 to 95.53. That’s some great swimming! This will be a busy week ahead: the Swim-a-Thon, the Silver Creek Sharks, and then the Overnighter and Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races.
MORE RECORDS BROKEN
Daniela Fasan is breaking records so fast we can barely keep up with her. She actually broke the 13-14 girls breaststroke record last week against Belwood with a time of :33.04, which we didn’t catch in time for last week’s email. Then on Saturday she broke another of Cherisse Hughes’ longstanding records from 1992, going a 1:06.81 in her Individual Medley. Congratulations Dani!
THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Toga Tuesday! And we’re hoping to see ALL penguins in the pool for the Swim-a-Thon on Wednesday. Start collecting pledges now and then swim as many laps as you can to raise money for the team and earn fun prizes too. This is our only fundraiser of the year, and we’re hoping to raise enough money to buy new starting blocks. All donations are tax-deductible. We appreciate your support!
WILL YOU BE AT SILVER CREEK ON SATURDAY?
This Saturday’s meet is at Silver Creek. If your child will be missing any part of the meet, you must let the coaches know TODAY. Please send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) and also notify the volunteer coordinators (volunteers@swimlpac.org). Silver Creek runs 8 lanes, so we need lots of extra timers and recorders. The good news is, the meet goes a lot faster with that many lanes!
Here are the swimmers we know will be missing all or part of the Silver Creek meet: Kailyn Altringer, Sophie Bagoye, Oskar Brady, Theo Brady, Alan Calderon, Ethan Calderon, Zoe Marley, Aaron Osborne, Melani Quezada, Siena Seps, Sofia Seps, Sarina Seps, Lauren Tang, Alexa Wise.
OVERNIGHTER AND CARDBOARD BOAT RACES ON SATURDAY
The team Overnighter and Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races will be this Saturday. Drop-off begins at 6:00pm; please do not start setting up tents any earlier, even if you are Association members. Parents are welcome to stay and cheer during the boat races. Please be prepared to take home the remains of any boats that you bring, as there is not enough room in the Los Paseos dumpster for all the soggy shipwrecks! The cost is $15 per person; signup forms are posted to the website. You may pay when you check in at the Overnighter and write one check for other upcoming events (see checklist below).
CHAMPS CHECKLIST: ALL ORDERS DUE THIS SATURDAY
The VCSL Championship Meet (“Champs”) will be on Saturday, July 18 — that’s only 4 weeks away! That means it’s time to get your orders in for meals, program ads, and t-shirts. Please note that you can write separate checks for each of these items, or bring the order forms with you to the Overnighter on Saturday and write one check for everything. All forms and payment are due by this Saturday, June 27.
- Champs Meals: Champs typically lasts all day (until about 4:00 pm), and your family is going to need to eat! We highly recommend that you pre-order meals either from the BBQ Snack Bar or from Panera. Proceeds from these sales help our team offset the cost of Champs. Please print out the Champs Meal Order Forms and indicate what items you’d like to order. Checks should be payable to “LPAC.” Be sure your family name is on each page of the order form.
- Champs Program Ads: A great way to show support for your swimmers and our team is to place an ad in the Champs program. Please print out the Champs Program Ad Order Form, which is also due by Saturday, June 27. You can either design your own ad, or Kris Fuss can help create one for you. All proceeds from program ads go directly to LPAC.
- Champs T-Shirts: We plan to have new t-shirts this year just for Champs so swimmers and parents can show off your penguin pride. The cost is $20 each. We’ll have designs and order forms available by the Overnighter.
RAFT TRIP: DON’T MISS THE BOAT!
Remember, this Saturday (June 27) is also the last day to turn in your Raft Trip forms.

LPAC: Friday reminders (6/19/15)
Hope you’re all enjoying your Friday! A few quick reminders before the weekend:
- Our meet is at home tomorrow against Montevideo. Swimmers need to check in with the coaches no later than 6:30 am. We know that’s early! But we have first warm-ups and need to get the meet started at 8:00 so we can be done by 2:00. Please arrive on time and ready to swim.
- Meet entries and volunteer assignments have been posted to the Montevideo @ LPAC meet page.
- If your child is ill Saturday morning, please call or text Coach Scott at 408-613-5126.
- Parents, please remember that at home meets we really need everyone to help out. We might need you to work another shift, and we ask that everyone stay to help clean up at the end. We are specifically seeking at least one more Kitchen Clean-Up volunteer to help move things back into the bin towards the end of the meet.
- Parents, when you check in tomorrow morning, please also sign up for volunteer jobs at Silver Creek and Champs. We need lots of extra timers and recorders at these events.
- We will have some extra LPAC team merchandise for sale on Saturday at the Announcer’s table.
- If you are planning to go on the Raft Trip, you need to let Chad Seps know ASAP. We may have to cancel the trip if we don’t get enough signups. There will be plenty of water (that part of the river is controlled by dam), so don’t miss the boat! Either turn in your forms to the RAFT TRIP folder or contact Chad at 408-887-3267 to confirm your spot.
- Remember that all swimmers in the 12-14 practice group are invited to Movie Night at the Keslins’ house Saturday night, starting at 8pm.
- Lots going on next week: Swim-a-Thon on Wednesday, meet at Silver Creek Saturday morning, then the Overnighter and cardboard boat races Saturday evening. Whew! Forms and details are all posted on the website.
GO PENGUINS!
LPAC: Weekly update (6/14/15)
Dear Penguins and Parents:
It sure feels good to get a win! Our powerful penguins defeated the Belwood Dolphins on Saturday and won the meet by a final score of 119.14 to 116.21. Meet results have been posted to the LPAC @ Belwood page of the website.
Next up: the Montevideo Piranhas! There are also lots of fun team events coming up in the next few weeks, so be sure you read below so you don’t miss out on any of the excitement.
**IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS AND SWIMMERS**
The Los Paseos Association Board has asked for our assistance in maintaining their rules during swim meets and practices. Safety is of course everyone’s top concern. We also need to to be respectful of the HOA property, some of which has been damaged recently. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay during swim practices, but we do ask that you please follow these guidelines:
- Children should not be at the pool without adult supervision; the coaches need to focus on the swimmers in the water.
- Kids should not be playing on the pool deck during practices. They are welcome to play on the grass but should not play in the horseshoe pits or around the storage shed area.
- Parents, please do not move furniture or adjust umbrellas during practices, and be sure to straighten up the area when you leave.
We appreciate your help keeping the pool environment safe and enjoyable for everyone!
RECORDS ARE STARTING TO FALL
Congratulations to Emily Scott for getting her first (but probably not her last) LPAC team record. Emily swam a blazing fast breaststroke at Belwood, and her time of :17.38 beat Daniela Fasan’s 9-10 Girls 50 Breaststroke record from 2012. No need to feel bad for Daniela, however, since she set a new record of her own, going :26.47 in the 13-14 Girls 50 Freestyle. That broke the previous record of :26.63 by Cherisse Hughes—a record that has stood for 23 years! Great swimming girls!
THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE
We are heading into the second week of the Two-Week Attendance Challenge in a dead heat: team-wide, the girls are tied with the boys for overall attendance. Be sure to come to practice every day if you can and earn a doughnut for yourself and for your friends!
SATURDAY’S MEET: MONTEVIDEO @ LPAC
Remember, if your child will be missing any part of the meet this Saturday, you must let the coaches know TODAY. Please send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) and also notify the volunteer coordinators (volunteers@swimlpac.org). This will be a home meet, so we are going to need everyone’s help to keep the meet running smoothly. Parents, you may be needed for more than one shift. And we will need everyone’s help to clean up after the meet.
Here are the swimmers we know will be missing all or part of the Montevideo meet: Alan Calderon, Ethan Calderon, Isabella Espinoza, Jake Fuss, Luuk Janssen, Mackenzie Keslin, Madison Mamola, Sarina Seps, Siena Seps, Sofia Seps, Hannah Waldron, Elizabeth Webb, Jessica Webb, Steven Webb, Alexa Wise.
MOVIE NIGHT UNDER THE STARS (6/20)
This Saturday, June 20, Nancy Keslin is hosting a Movie Night Under the Stars for all swimmers in the 12-14 practice group. Come around 8:00 pm to enjoy a movie under the stars and s’mores. You might want to bring a blanket to sit on and some snacks or drinks to share. Parents are welcome to stay too! See the Age Group Events page of the website for additional details and a map.
SWIM-A-THON FUNDRAISER
Our annual Swim-a-Thon fundraiser will be coming up on Wednesday, June 24 during regular practice times. Please visit the Swim-a-Thon page of the website to download forms (they are also attached to this email) and start collecting pledges! It’s a great chance to help raise funds for the team while challenging yourself and getting a great workout.
This year, we’re trying to raise additional funds so we can purchase new diving blocks. In addition to prizes for meeting goals set by the coaches, most laps swam, and most pledges collected, there will also be a raffle in each age group to win a one-on-one coaching session with a coach of your choice. So come on out and swim, swim, swim!
OVERNIGHTER AND CARDBOARD BOAT RACES
The team Overnighter this year will be the night of Saturday, June 27. This annual event is one of LPAC’s most treasured traditions and a highlight of the swim team season. LPAC swimmers get to camp out in tents on the grass next to the Los Paseos pool and stay up late swimming, dancing, playing dodge ball, and just having fun with their friends. LPAC Board members and their spouses stay the night and take shifts to be sure children are supervised at all times. The cost is $15 per swimmer. Swimmers ages 6 and under are welcome to come on Saturday evening, but must be picked up by 10:00pm. You can find more information and download the form on the Overnighter page of the website.
The Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races also take place during the Overnighter, starting at 6:00 pm. All penguins are encouraged to team up with their swim team friends to construct a sea-worthy vessel using only cardboard, duct tape, and paint. Unofficial prizes are awarded for the fastest boat, best boat theme and the most spectacular sink. Parents are welcome to stay and cheer. Please be prepared to take home the remains of any boats that you bring. There is not enough room in the Los Paseos dumpster for all the soggy shipwrecks! Check the Cardboard Boat Races page for more details.
RAFT TRIP: TURN IN FORMS NOW!
The annual LPAC raft trip will be on Saturday, July 4 (there is no meet that weekend). This event does usually sell out, so if you’re planning to go, please go to the Raft Trip page of the website and print out entry forms. Turn those in with payment to the “RAFT TRIP” folder no later than June 27. The cost is $25 per person. Please note that you also need to bring signed waivers on the day of the trip.
ONE CHECK FOR ALL FUN ACTIVITIES
This year we’re going to try something new that will (hopefully) simplify your life a little. We’re going to give families the option to write just one check for various team events, including the Swim-a-Thon, Raft Trip, Overnighter, Banquet, etc. Please bring your checkbook with you when you drop your kids off at the Overnighter, and you can make one payment instead of writing 4 or 5 different checks. Please note that you will still need to fill out separate entry forms, permission slips, etc.
