LPAC Reminder: Champs Orders and Raft Trip forms due Saturday!

This is just a quick reminder to fire up your printer and fill out some important forms before Saturday.

First, if your kids are attending the Overnighter, you need to have a permission slip with your emergency contact information. The cost is $15 per child.

You also need to turn in orders for Champs Meals and/or Champs Program Ads by this Saturday. These are both important ways we raise funds to help defray the cost of Champs.

Finally, Saturday is also the last day to turn in Raft Trip forms.

Click on the links below to download and print all the forms:

Please fill out them out NOW and be sure you turn them in with payment no later than Saturday when you check in at the Overnighter! If you’d like, you can write one  check (payable to “LPAC”) for all of these items.

LPAC: Weekly update (6/22/15)

Dear Penguins and Parents:

Way to go! After losing our dual meet against Montevideo last year, we came back and crushed them in 2015. LPAC won Saturday’s meet by a score of 118.93 to 95.53. That’s some great swimming! This will be a busy week ahead: the Swim-a-Thon, the Silver Creek Sharks, and then the Overnighter and Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races.

MORE RECORDS BROKEN

Daniela Fasan is breaking records so fast we can barely keep up with her. She actually broke the 13-14 girls breaststroke record last week against Belwood with a time of :33.04, which we didn’t catch in time for last week’s email. Then on Saturday she broke another of Cherisse Hughes’ longstanding records from 1992, going a 1:06.81 in her Individual Medley. Congratulations Dani!

THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Toga Tuesday! And we’re hoping to see ALL penguins in the pool for the Swim-a-Thon on Wednesday. Start collecting pledges now and then swim as many laps as you can to raise money for the team and earn fun prizes too. This is our only fundraiser of the year, and we’re hoping to raise enough money to buy new starting blocks. All donations are tax-deductible. We appreciate your support!

WILL YOU BE AT SILVER CREEK ON SATURDAY?

This Saturday’s meet is at Silver Creek. If your child will be missing any part of the meet, you must let the coaches know TODAY. Please send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) and also notify the volunteer coordinators (volunteers@swimlpac.org). Silver Creek runs 8 lanes, so we need lots of extra timers and recorders. The good news is, the meet goes a lot faster with that many lanes!

Here are the swimmers we know will be missing all or part of the Silver Creek meet: Kailyn Altringer, Sophie Bagoye, Oskar Brady, Theo Brady, Alan Calderon, Ethan Calderon, Zoe Marley, Aaron Osborne, Melani Quezada, Siena Seps, Sofia Seps, Sarina Seps, Lauren Tang, Alexa Wise.

OVERNIGHTER AND CARDBOARD BOAT RACES ON SATURDAY

The team Overnighter and Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races will be this Saturday. Drop-off begins at 6:00pm; please do not start setting up tents any earlier, even if you are Association members. Parents are welcome to stay and cheer during the boat races. Please be prepared to take home the remains of any boats that you bring, as there is not enough room in the Los Paseos dumpster for all the soggy shipwrecks! The cost is $15 per person; signup forms are posted to the website. You may pay when you check in at the Overnighter and write one check for other upcoming events (see checklist below).

CHAMPS CHECKLIST: ALL ORDERS DUE THIS SATURDAY

The VCSL Championship Meet (“Champs”) will be on Saturday, July 18 — that’s only 4 weeks away! That means it’s time to get your orders in for meals, program ads, and t-shirts. Please note that you can write separate checks for each of these items, or bring the order forms with you to the Overnighter on Saturday and write one check for everything. All forms and payment are due by this Saturday, June 27.

  • Champs Meals: Champs typically lasts all day (until about 4:00 pm), and your family is going to need to eat! We highly recommend that you pre-order meals either from the BBQ Snack Bar or from Panera. Proceeds from these sales help our team offset the cost of Champs. Please print out the Champs Meal Order Forms and indicate what items you’d like to order. Checks should be payable to “LPAC.” Be sure your family name is on each page of the order form.
  • Champs Program Ads: A great way to show support for your swimmers and our team is to place an ad in the Champs program. Please print out the Champs Program Ad Order Form, which is also due by Saturday, June 27. You can either design your own ad, or Kris Fuss can help create one for you. All proceeds from program ads go directly to LPAC.
  • Champs T-Shirts: We plan to have new t-shirts this year just for Champs so swimmers and parents can show off your penguin pride. The cost is $20 each. We’ll have designs and order forms available by the Overnighter.
RAFT TRIP: DON’T MISS THE BOAT!

Remember, this Saturday (June 27) is also the last day to turn in your Raft Trip forms.

LPAC: Friday reminders (6/19/15)

Hope you’re all enjoying your Friday! A few quick reminders before the weekend:

  1. Our meet is at home tomorrow against Montevideo. Swimmers need to check in with the coaches no later than 6:30 am. We know that’s early! But we have first warm-ups and need to get the meet started at 8:00 so we can be done by 2:00. Please arrive on time and ready to swim.
  2. Meet entries and volunteer assignments have been posted to the Montevideo @ LPAC meet page.
  3. If your child is ill Saturday morning, please call or text Coach Scott at 408-613-5126.
  4. Parents, please remember that at home meets we really need everyone to help out. We might need you to work another shift, and we ask that everyone stay to help clean up at the end. We are specifically seeking at least one more Kitchen Clean-Up volunteer to help move things back into the bin towards the end of the meet.
  5. Parents, when you check in tomorrow morning, please also sign up for volunteer jobs at Silver Creek and Champs. We need lots of extra timers and recorders at these events.
  6. We will have some extra LPAC team merchandise for sale on Saturday at the Announcer’s table.
  7. If you are planning to go on the Raft Trip, you need to let Chad Seps know ASAP. We may have to cancel the trip if we don’t get enough signups. There will be plenty of water (that part of the river is controlled by dam), so don’t miss the boat! Either turn in your forms to the RAFT TRIP folder or contact Chad at 408-887-3267 to confirm your spot.
  8. Remember that all swimmers in the 12-14 practice group are invited to Movie Night at the Keslins’ house Saturday night, starting at 8pm.
  9. Lots going on next week: Swim-a-Thon on Wednesday, meet at Silver Creek Saturday morning, then the Overnighter and cardboard boat races Saturday evening. Whew! Forms and details are all posted on the website.

GO PENGUINS!

LPAC: Weekly update (6/14/15)

Dear Penguins and Parents:

It sure feels good to get a win! Our powerful penguins defeated the Belwood Dolphins on Saturday and won the meet by a final score of 119.14 to 116.21. Meet results have been posted to the LPAC @ Belwood page of the website.

Next up: the Montevideo Piranhas! There are also lots of fun team events coming up in the next few weeks, so be sure you read below so you don’t miss out on any of the excitement.

**IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS AND SWIMMERS**

The Los Paseos Association Board has asked for our assistance in maintaining their rules during swim meets and practices. Safety is of course everyone’s top concern. We also need to to be respectful of the HOA property, some of which has been damaged recently. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay during swim practices, but we do ask that you please follow these guidelines:

  • Children should not be at the pool without adult supervision; the coaches need to focus on the swimmers in the water.
  • Kids should not be playing on the pool deck during practices. They are welcome to play on the grass but should not play in the horseshoe pits or around the storage shed area.
  • Parents, please do not move furniture or adjust umbrellas during practices, and be sure to straighten up the area when you leave.

We appreciate your help keeping the pool environment safe and enjoyable for everyone!

RECORDS ARE STARTING TO FALL

Congratulations to Emily Scott for getting her first (but probably not her last) LPAC team record. Emily swam a blazing fast breaststroke at Belwood, and her time of :17.38 beat Daniela Fasan’s 9-10 Girls 50 Breaststroke record from 2012. No need to feel bad for Daniela, however, since she set a new record of her own, going :26.47 in the 13-14 Girls 50 Freestyle. That broke the previous record of :26.63 by Cherisse Hughes—a record that has stood for 23 years! Great swimming girls!

THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE

We are heading into the second week of the Two-Week Attendance Challenge in a dead heat: team-wide, the girls are tied with the boys for overall attendance. Be sure to come to practice every day if you can and earn a doughnut for yourself and for your friends!

SATURDAY’S MEET: MONTEVIDEO @ LPAC

Remember, if your child will be missing any part of the meet this Saturday, you must let the coaches know TODAY. Please send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) and also notify the volunteer coordinators (volunteers@swimlpac.org). This will be a home meet, so we are going to need everyone’s help to keep the meet running smoothly. Parents, you may be needed for more than one shift. And we will need everyone’s help to clean up after the meet.

Here are the swimmers we know will be missing all or part of the Montevideo meet: Alan Calderon, Ethan Calderon, Isabella Espinoza, Jake Fuss, Luuk Janssen, Mackenzie Keslin, Madison Mamola, Sarina Seps, Siena Seps, Sofia Seps, Hannah Waldron, Elizabeth Webb, Jessica Webb, Steven Webb, Alexa Wise.

MOVIE NIGHT UNDER THE STARS (6/20)

This Saturday, June 20, Nancy Keslin is hosting a Movie Night Under the Stars for all swimmers in the 12-14 practice group. Come around 8:00 pm to enjoy a movie under the stars and s’mores. You might want to bring a blanket to sit on and some snacks or drinks to share. Parents are welcome to stay too! See the Age Group Events page of the website for additional details and a map.

SWIM-A-THON FUNDRAISER

Our annual Swim-a-Thon fundraiser will be coming up on Wednesday, June 24 during regular practice times. Please visit the Swim-a-Thon page of the website to download forms (they are also attached to this email) and start collecting pledges! It’s  a great chance to help raise funds for the team while challenging yourself and getting a great workout.

This year, we’re trying to raise additional funds so we can purchase new diving blocks. In addition to prizes for meeting goals set by the coaches, most laps swam, and most pledges collected, there will also be a raffle in each age group to win a one-on-one coaching session with a coach of your choice. So come on out and swim, swim, swim!

OVERNIGHTER AND CARDBOARD BOAT RACES

The team Overnighter this year will be the night of Saturday, June 27. This annual event is one of LPAC’s most treasured traditions and a highlight of the swim team season. LPAC swimmers get to camp out in tents on the grass next to the Los Paseos pool and stay up late swimming, dancing, playing dodge ball, and just having fun with their friends. LPAC Board members and their spouses stay the night and take shifts to be sure children are supervised at all times. The cost is $15 per swimmer. Swimmers ages 6 and under are welcome to come on Saturday evening, but must be picked up by 10:00pm. You can find more information and download the form on the Overnighter page of the website.

The Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races also take place during the Overnighter, starting at 6:00 pm. All penguins are encouraged to team up with their swim team friends to construct a sea-worthy vessel using only cardboard, duct tape, and paint. Unofficial prizes are awarded for the fastest boat, best boat theme and the most spectacular sink. Parents are welcome to stay and cheer. Please be prepared to take home the remains of any boats that you bring. There is not enough room in the Los Paseos dumpster for all the soggy shipwrecks! Check the Cardboard Boat Races page for more details.

RAFT TRIP: TURN IN FORMS NOW!

The annual LPAC raft trip will be on Saturday, July 4 (there is no meet that weekend). This event does usually sell out, so if you’re planning to go, please go to the Raft Trip page of the website and print out entry forms. Turn those in with payment to the “RAFT TRIP” folder no later than June 27. The cost is $25 per person. Please note that you also need to bring signed waivers on the day of the trip.

ONE CHECK FOR ALL FUN ACTIVITIES

This year we’re going to try something new that will (hopefully) simplify your life a little. We’re going to give families the option to write just one check for various team events, including the Swim-a-Thon, Raft Trip, Overnighter, Banquet, etc. Please bring your checkbook with you when you drop your kids off at the Overnighter, and you can make one payment instead of writing 4 or 5 different checks. Please note that you will still need to fill out separate entry forms, permission slips, etc.

Friday reminders (6/12/15)

Just a few reminders before tomorrow:

  1. The meet tomorrow is at Belwood (100 Belwood Gateway, off Blossom Hill Rd.). See the LPAC @ Belwood meet web page for a map.
  2. Swimmers must check in with coaches no later than 7:15 am.
  3. Call or text Coach Scott (408-613-5126) if your child is ill Saturday morning.
  4. Parents, please check in with the volunteer coordinators even if you are not assigned a shift. We may need extra helpers for second shift. And remember to bring your volunteer badges!
  5. Swimmers, please remember that you cannot wear any high school, college, or year-round team caps during races. If those are the only caps you have, please turn them inside out. We do have LPAC caps available for $10.
  6. Please do not bring any tarps or tents with bottoms. EZ-Ups are OK.
  7. Remember to always check OUT with the coaches before you leave the meet!

Look forward to seeing you all in the morning…GO PENGUINS!

LPAC Weekly Update: 6/8/15

Dear Penguins and Parents:

Our penguins swam great at Almaden and actually beat the Gators in place points, but Almaden had a higher percentage of improved times and ended up winning the meet by a score of 129.64 to 124.11. This week we’ll be getting ready to take on the Belwood Dolphins.

WILL YOU BE AT THE MEET ON SATURDAY?

If you will not be swimming at the meet this Saturday, or will have to miss any part of the meet, you must let the coaches know TODAY. Please send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) and also notify Volunteer Coordinator Wendy Marley (marleywl@yahoo.com).

So far, we have heard that the following swimmers are missing all or part of the meet this Saturday (6/13): Holland Adam, Zurie Adam, Easton Apolinar, Sophie Bagoye, Shaelan Barber, Lexie Barber, Tara Buchanan, Trevor Buchanan, Tanner Buchanan, Ty Buchanan, Madison Doutt, Jake Fuss, Izabella Hasse, Jazmine Hasse, Mackenzie Keslin, Ainsley Keslin, Matthew Lombardi, Claire Lombardi, Nikolas Mamola, Madison Mamola, Zoe Marley, Alexa Wise.

THE TWO-WEEK DOUGHNUT CHALLENGE: BATTLE OF THE SEXES

As we start up morning practices, we’ll be doing our two-week attendance challenge with a new twist. For the next two weeks (6/8 – 6/19), the coaches will keep track of attendance for each practice group. At the end of two weeks, they’ll compare the total attendance percentage of girls vs. boys. The winning group (either the girls or the boys) in each age group will get doughnuts. So come on out to practice every day if you can!

THIS WEEK’S DRESS-UP DAY: JERSEY THURSDAY

This Thursday (June 11), wear your favorite sports team jersey or shirt to practice!

DUAL MEET #2: LPAC @ BELWOOD (SATURDAY, 6/13)

This weekend is another away meet at the Belwood Pool & Cabana Club (100 Belwood Gateway in Los Gatos). Swimmers will need to check in no later than 7:15 am. We’ll post volunteer assignments and meet entries to the LPAC @ Belwood web page later in the week. Belwood runs six lanes, so the meets usually go a little faster than our home meets.

8 & UNDER GOLFLAND TRIP ON FRIDAY

On Friday (June 12), all swimmers in the 8 & under practice group are invited to a fun trip to Golfland right after practice. Check the Age Group Events page of the website for more information.

Friday reminders (6/5/15)

Just a few quick reminders before our first meet of the season:

  1. Tomorrow’s meet is at Almaden Country Club (6663 Hampton Drive). See map on website.
  2. You will need to find parking on the streets around the pool; the parking lot is reserved for ACC members.
  3. Swimmers must check in with coaches no later than 7:30 am.
  4. If your swimmer is ill Saturday morning, please call Coach Scott’s cell phone: 408-613-5126.
  5. Parents, please check in with the volunteer coordinators even if you don’t have an assigned shift. We might need extra help.
  6. Space is very limited at the Almaden pool, so plan to get cozy and share EZ-Ups with other families. It’s good practice for Champs!
  7. Meet entries and volunteer assignments have been posted to the LPAC @ Almaden meet web page.
  8. Swimmers, always remember to check OUT with the coaches before you leave a meet. You might be needed to fill in for a relay.
  9. Morning practices start on Monday! See the Practices page of the website for times. Remember that the older kids have an extra 30 minutes of dryland on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Get a good night’s sleep tonight, and we’ll see you all at Almaden in the morning. GO PENGUINS!

LPAC Weekly Update: 6/1/15

Many thanks to all our swimmers, coaches, and parent volunteers for working so hard at Time Trials on Saturday and getting our season off to a great start. Now it’s time to take on the Almaden Gators!

TIME TRIALS MAKE-UPS TODAY – NO REGULAR PRACTICES

Remember that today (Monday, June 1) is Time Trials Make-Up Day. There are no regular practices. Those of you who swam all your events on Saturday get to enjoy an evening off!

Swimmers who did not attend Time Trials (or who did not swim all of their events) must attend Time Trials Make-Up Day today. Please be at the pool and check in with the coaches at 6:00 pm. We need parents to stay and help set up, serve as timers and recorders, and clean up afterwards. We hope to be done around 8:00 pm.

Please note that it is very important for swimmers to get a time in every event. A swimmer who enters a meet without a time is ineligible for improvement, which ends up costing the team valuable points. Last year LPAC barely beat Almaden by the slimmest of margins (.01 points), so every point really does count! (If you’re curious about how the scoring system works, check out How Swim Meets Are Scored on the team website.)

THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE

The coaches this week will be working with swimmers on specific focus areas based on what they saw at time trials. They will also be working on relays, diving off the blocks, and getting the whole team “race ready” for the meet at Almaden this weekend. Although we know this is a busy week with end-of-school activities, please try to come to practice every day if you can…we will need all our penguins swimming their best on Saturday!

PICTURE MAKE-UP DAY: WEDNESDAY (6/3)

If you weren’t able to make it to Team Picture Day, you can come for individual photo make-ups this Wednesday (June 3) at 4:00 pm. Please bring your checkbook if you want to order anything beyond the standard team package.

WILL YOU BE AT THE MEET ON SATURDAY?

If you will not be swimming at the meet this Saturday, or will have to miss any part of the meet, you must let the coaches know TODAY. You can either send email to the coaches (coaches@swimlpac.org) or fill out the “Note to Coaches” form at the pool. You should also notify Volunteer Coordinator Wendy Marley (marleywl@yahoo.com).

In general, please plan to notify both the coaches and the volunteer coordinators at least one week ahead of time if you will be missing a meet. The coaches start assigning events and relays on Mondays, and the volunteer coordinators need to be sure all shifts are covered. So please let us know ASAP if your swimmers will be missing any meets this season.

So far, we have heard that the following swimmers are missing all or part of the meet this Saturday (6/6): Ashley Blacow, Emily Burke, Elizabeth Burke, Madison Doutt, Jake DeSantis, Chase DeSantis, Taylor DeSantis, Nikolas Mamola, Madison Mamola, Alexa Wise, Christian Wise.

DUAL MEET #1: LPAC @ ALMADEN (SATURDAY, 6/6)

Our first “real” meet of the season will be an away meet against the Almaden Gators — traditionally the toughest team in the league. It was very exciting last year to get a dual meet victory over Almaden, and we’d love to do it again. Watch for more details about the meet (including check-in time and volunteer assignments) later this week.

MORNING PRACTICES START NEXT WEEK!

We will switch to morning practice times starting next week (June 8). Practice times will be as follows:

  • 15-18: 6:45–7:45/8:15* am (*dryland on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays)
  • 12-14: 7:45–8:45/9:15* am (*dryland on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays)
  • 9-11: 8:45–9:30 am
  • 8 & under: 9:30–10:15 am

Swimmers who unable to attend morning practices because of school or work commitments may attend night practices, Monday through Thursday from 8:00-9:00 pm. Swimmers must have coaches’ prior permission to attend night practices.

*Swimmers ages 12 and up will also have 30 minutes of dryland exercises immediately after their regular practice times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Please bring running shoes on these days.

RAFT TRIP: TURN IN FORMS NOW!

The annual LPAC raft trip will be on Saturday, July 4 (there is no meet that weekend). We meet up near Oakdale and reserve rafts for what is usually a slow, gentle ride down the scenic Stanislaus River. Small rapids add to the excitement, but are tame enough for first-time rafters. Penguins and parents are welcome to join in the fun! Many families choose to spend the night in Oakdale either Friday or Saturday night (or both) and make it a fun family weekend.

You probably already know that part of the LPAC tradition includes attacking other boats with water guns and buckets to see who is truly “King of the River.” If you prefer a less intense experience, however, you can designate your raft as a “dry boat.”

FUN AGE-GROUP EVENTS

Next Friday (June 12), all swimmers in the 8 & under practice group are invited to a fun trip to Golfland right after practice. On Wednesday, July 8, swimmers in the 9-11 practice group can go to Rockin’ Jump from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. These events are optional, and there is a charge to participate. Thanks to Judy Seps and Mary Patterson for offering to coordinate these fun events! We’re also planning something for the 12-14 age group; stay tuned for more details. Check the Age Group Events page of the website for more information.

UPCOMING EVENTS

LPAC Update (5/26/15)

Hope everyone had a fun time at Penguin Madness on Friday. We had a great turnout for yesterday’s Memorial Day swim clinic, and the coaches enjoyed working with swimmers on their starts and turns. Now it’s time to start looking forward to Time Trials on Saturday!

*NEW EVENING PRACTICE TIMES START TODAY*

For the next two weeks, our evening practice times are compressed because the pool is open to members until 6:00 pm.  Please note the new times and age groups (today through June 5):

  • 8 & under: 6:00–7:00 pm
  • 9-12: 7:00–8:00 pm
  • 13-18: 8:00–9:00 pm
THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE

In these two weeks of compressed practices, the lanes are going to be more crowded than usual. The coaches will be focusing on meet readiness before Time Trials on Saturday, so it’s especially important that new swimmers come to practice every day this week if possible.

REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS

We’re very happy to have our full coaching staff on deck now that Julia, Nicole and Jaclyn are all done with their college classes. We’d just like to remind parents that while you are welcome to remain on the pool deck during your child’s practice, we ask that you please refrain from talking to your child during practice sessions. It can be very distracting to both the swimmers and the coaches. If you have any questions or concerns, please try to speak to one of the coaches either before or after practice is over. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

PICTURE DAY ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 27

Team picture day is on Wednesday, May 27. We will start taking individual photos at 4:00 pm. The team photo will be taken at 5:00 pm, and any remaining individual photos will be taken after the group picture. Please note that we will still be having practices that night at the times noted above.

All swimmers should wear either a black-and-white LPAC team suit or a plain black suit. If you ordered a new suit this year, it will be available to pick up at practice on Tuesday (5/26).

Every swimmer gets a basic photo package for free (included as part of registration fees) that includes an 8×10 team photo, 4×6 individual, and photo button. But you can also order buddy portraits, calendars, magnets, posters, and more. Check the Picture Day page of the website to see all of the options, and remember to bring your checkbook if you want to order any extras!

TIME TRIALS ON SATURDAY, MAY 30

Time Trials will be this Saturday, May 30. Swimmers and parents should check in no later than 7:15 am. Coach Scott will have a brief meeting for new swimmers and their parents starting at 7:20 am. The meet should be done around 1:00 pm.

If you are new to the team, you might want to check out the Swim Meet Survival Tips article on the website for some helpful advice about what to bring, what to wear, etc.

If your child will not be able to attend Time Trials, you need to let the coaches know ASAP. Please send email to coaches@swimlpac.org or leave a “Note to Coaches” in the file box. Any swimmers who do not attend Time Trials must come to the make-up day on Monday, June 1.

VOLUNTEER SHIFTS AT TIME TRIALS

Volunteer assignments for this Saturday have been posted to the Time Trials page on the website under “Links.” Meet entries and results will eventually be posted here as well, once those reports are available.

Please check the list for your name and assigned shift(s). If you don’t see your name listed but you do have a child who will be swimming at Time Trials, please e-mail Wendy Marley at marleywl@yahoo.com. If you see your name but your child is NOT swimming, please also e-mail Wendy, so the position can be filled. We still have openings for timers, both first and second shift.

Please note, we really need everyone to pitch in at Time Trials. Because there is no other team, we have to man all the volunteer roles, and we have several families who will be out of town this weekend. If you have a child swimming, we need your help! If you have more than one swimmer swimming, we may need you to work an extra shift. If you know another family in the same position, offer to split a second shift with them!

TIME TRIALS MAKE-UP DAY: MONDAY, JUNE 1 (NO REGULAR PRACTICES)

Swimmers who cannot attend Time Trials on Saturday must come to Make-Up Day on Monday, June 1 at 6:00 pm. Parents are expected to stay and volunteer as timers and recorders during Make-Up Day. Please note there will be no regular team practices on Monday.

WANTED: BOY’S SIZE 28 BLACK OR LPAC TEAM SUIT

We are seeking a boy’s pair of size 28 jammers (either black or LPAC team suit) for a new penguin who won’t have his suit in time for Picture Day due to an ordering snafu. Please reply to this email if you have an extra suit you don’t mind sharing. Thank you!

SWIM LESSONS

Though our LPAC coaches focus on stroke technique every day at practice, there’s only so much they can do with 30-40 kids in the pool at one time. Individual or small-group swim lessons can be a great way to improve your strokes, starts, and turns even more. Check the Swim Lessons page of our team website for some different places that offer individualized stroke instruction for all ages.

LPAC Update (5/18/15)

THIS WEEK AT PRACTICE

It’s Kick Week at Los Paseos! We’ll be spending every day this week focusing on a very important (but sometimes overlooked) part of stroke technique: kicking. We will also be introducing breaststroke to the newest penguins.

PENGUIN MADNESS THIS FRIDAY

Penguin Madness will be this Friday, May 22 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. There will be no swim practice on this day.

Preliminary team rosters are posted to the Penguin Madness page of the website. Swimmers are encouraged (but not required) to wear the color of their designated penguin team. Note that these are all dryland games, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes so you can run, jump, crawl, etc.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late! Send an email today to info@swimlpac.org and include your child’s name and age. There is no cost for this event.

Parents and siblings are welcome to come and cheer for their favorite penguins. We recommend that you bring warm layers, plus snacks, water, and folding chairs or blankets to sit on. (Please note that we are not having a Baja Fresh fundraiser for Penguin Madness this year.) Hope to see you all there!

MEMORIAL DAY SWIM CLINIC

There are no regular team practices on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25), but swimmers are invited to attend an optional Swim Clinic that morning from 9:00am to 10:30am. The coaches will be working with small groups of kids on diving from the blocks, backstroke starts, pulldowns, and all types of turns. Swimmers who want to work on any of these skills are welcome to attend. There is no cost for this event.

PRACTICE TIMES CHANGE AFTER MEMORIAL DAY

After Memorial Day, the pool is open to its members until 6:00 pm. This means that we have to compress our swim practices for the last two weeks until school is out (May 26 until June 5). Please note the new times and age groups:

  • 8 & under: 6:00–7:00 pm
  • 9-12: 7:00–8:00 pm
  • 13-18: 8:00–9:00 pm
PICTURE DAY ON MAY 27

TIME TRIALS ON MAY 30

The first swim meet of the season is Time Trials, which is just like a regular meet but without the other team. At Time Trials, LPAC swimmers race against their own teammates to establish times in every event under real race conditions. These times are used to determine seedings and calculate improvement points at the dual meets. It’s a good chance for swimmers and parents to get warmed up for the start of the season—and a great opportunity for our newest penguins to experience their very first races!

Attendance at Time Trials is mandatory, and we need parents to volunteer for positions just like at dual meets. If you haven’t yet signed up for a volunteer shift, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Wendy Marley.

If your child will be unable to attend time trials, you need to let the coaches know ASAP. Please send email to coaches@swimlpac.org or leave a “Note to Coaches” in the file box. Any swimmers who do not attend Time Trials must come to the make-up day on Monday, June 1, and parents need to stay to help time and record.
