LPAC: Weekly Update (7/3/17)

Dear Penguins and Parents:

The raft trip was quick and cold this year, but still lots of fun! Hope you all enjoy the day off tomorrow and have a happy and safe Fourth of July. We are in the homestretch now, with only three weeks left in the swim team season. Warning: it’s going to go by very fast!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO SWIMMERS AND PARENTS

After today, there are only 13 total practices left in the swim team season. Our team has a legitimate chance to move up at Champs this year, but to do that, we need EVERY swimmer to continue improving. And the best way to improve is to come to practice — not just 2 or 3 times a week, but every day! We know that everyone has lots of activities planned over the summer, but if we could get every swimmer to focus on LPAC for the next two and a half weeks, it would make a huge difference. Parents, please help by bringing your kids (and waking up those teenagers!) every day. We can do this!

SATURDAY’S MEET: AT SILVER CREEK

This Saturday’s meet will be at Silver Creek Valley Country Club (SCVCC). Swimmer check-in time will be 7:20 am. The families we know who will be missing all or part of the meet are: Adam, Burke, Espinoza, Fuss, Musoll-Buendia, Mamola, Pickett, and Quezada. Please notify both the coaches and volunteer coordinators ASAP if your name should be added to this list.

The Silver Creek pool has 8 lanes, which means we need extra timers and recorders…but also means the meet goes by fairly quickly! See the Silver Creek page of the website for map and additional information.

OVERNIGHTER ON SATURDAY

This Saturday evening (7/8) is the Overnighter and the Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races. Drop-off starts at 6:00 pm; please do NOT start setting up tents before then, even if you are members at the pool. Please note that swimmers of all ages are welcome to attend, but only swimmers 7 and older spend the night. Parents can pick up the 6 & unders at 10:00 pm (or earlier if they get tired).

Kids who are camping out should bring a tent, sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight, warm sweatshirt, change of clothes, swim suit, towel, pajamas, toothbrush, toothpaste, snacks, and games. The high school group sleeps outside on lawn chairs.

If you build a cardboard boat, remember you can only use cardboard, duct tape or packing tape, glue, and paint. Please be prepared to take the soggy wreckage home with you; there is not enough room in the dumpster for all the shipwrecks! Bring your boats to the staging area on the basketball courts at 6:00 pm. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay and watch the boat races, which usually get started around 6:15 pm.

The cost for the Overnighter is $15 per swimmer. Please complete the form and turn in with payment to the Activities folder (or you can pay when you check in Saturday evening). Forms and additional information can be found on the Overnighter page of the website.

Campers must be picked up by 8:00 am on Sunday morning (7/9); please come before then to help your kids pack up their tents and belongings. We do still need a few more parents to sign up online and help with Sunday morning cleanup (starting at 7:00 am). The Board members and spouses who stay up all night will be tired and ready to go home by then, so your help is greatly appreciated!

CANCER FUNDRAISER

We’re so proud of all our penguins who swam in the 25s to Save Lives Relay-a-Thon. So far our team has raised over $3,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society. That’s some serious Penguin Power! You can still turn in a check (made out to LPAC) or donate online: https://www.crowdrise.com/25s-to-save-lives. Thank you very much for supporting this important cause!

Happy Fun Friday! Just a few quick reminders:

  • If you are going on the Raft Trip tomorrow, be sure to be at the Sunshine Rafting parking lot no later than 9:00 am. Don’t forget to bring a lunch and pack it in a waterproof container or Ziploc bags. Remember, everything you take on the raft can and will get wet! See the Raft Trip web page for map and more information. Bring a signed waiver if you haven’t already turned that in.
  • There are a few spots still available for the Raft Trip if you’d like to go but haven’t signed up already. If you’re interested, please call or text Chad Seps ASAP: 408-887-3267.
  • There will be morning practices at the usual times on Monday, July 3. There are no practices on Tuesday, July 4.
  • Please send email to the coaches and volunteer coordinators if your child will be missing any part of next Saturday’s meet (July 8 at Silver Creek).

Have a great weekend!

LPAC Weekly Update: 6/26/17

Dear Penguins and Parents:

Woo hoo! With a 118.1 to 112.8 victory over Almaden, our mighty penguins are now 3-0! Meet results have been posted to the Almaden page of the website.

25s TO SAVE LIVES

Thank you to everyone who participated in Friday’s 25s to Save Lives fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It was a lot of fun, and it felt amazing to see all that penguin power going for such a good cause. You can still turn in donations to the “CANCER” folder or donate online at crowdrise.com/25s-to-save-lives. Thank you for your support!

WILL YOU BE AT THE SILVER CREEK MEET?

There is no meet this weekend due to the 4th of July holiday, but the coaches and volunteer coordinators still need to know if you will be at the Silver Creek meet on July 8. So far the only families we know will be missing some or all of the meet are: Espinoza, Musoll-Buendia, and Quezada.

CHAMPS PROGRAM ADS DUE THIS WEEK

Show your penguin pride and place an ad in the VCSL Champs Program! 100% of the proceeds go directly to LPAC, so this is a great way to help support the team while giving a shout-out to your favorite penguins or promoting your business. The cost is $15 for a business card-size ad, $30 for half-page, and $50 for full-page. Use the Champs Ad Order Form to design your own ad, or just email photos and text to Kris Fuss and she can design one for you. Please submit no later than Saturday, July 1.

FUN AGE GROUP EVENTS COMING UP!

There are a couple of fun events coming up. This Friday (June 30), all swimmers in the 9-11 practice group (plus parents and siblings) are invited to go see the 11:15 am showing of “Despicable Me 3” at Tennant Station in Morgan Hill. The following week, on Monday, July 3, all swimmers in the 8 & under and 9-11 groups are invited to Golfland from 11 am – 1 pm. See the Age Group Events web page for more details. Thank you to Judy Seps and Ashley Katz for coordinating!

NO PRACTICE ON JULY 4

Please note that there will be no practices next Tuesday, July 4. Happy Independence Day! However, there will be practices at the usual times the rest of the week. We know people will be a little tired after the Raft Trip and/or fireworks, but please try to come to every practice if you can. We want to keep our undefeated streak alive!

OVERNIGHTER AND CARDBOARD BOAT RACES: JULY 8

The annual Overnighter will be on Saturday, July 8 to Sunday, July 9. This event is one of LPAC’s most treasured traditions and a highlight of every swim team season. LPAC swimmers get to camp out in tents on the grass next to the Los Paseos pool and stay up late swimming, dancing, playing dodge ball, and just having fun with their friends. The Penguin Regatta Cardboard Boat Races also take place during the Overnighter, so you might want to start building those boats now!

GO PENGUINS!

LPAC: Thursday reminders (6/22/17)

A few quick reminders:

  • Practice times are a little different for tomorrow’s 25 to Save Lives relay fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (Friday 6/23). The times do overlap by a bit, as we’ll be assembling teams for one group while the previous group finishes their relays. Feel free to come early or stay late to help cheer on your fellow penguins. Be sure to keep collecting pledges so your team can help make a difference with every lap! And feel free to share the online link via social media or email.
    • High School: 7:45-8:30 am
    • 12-14: 8:30-9:15 am
    • 9-11: 9:00-9:45 am
    • 8 & under: 9:30-10:20 am
  • Tomorrow morning (Friday 6/23) is your LAST chance to turn in Raft Trip forms and payment. If you’re worried about the river being too fast, rest assured. The flow is controlled by a dam, and while it will be a little faster than in past years (i.e., you won’t have to get out and push the boat at any point!), Sunshine Rafting has said that it is still a safe and easy ride. See the Raft Trip page of the website to download the forms.
  • Saturday’s meet (6/24) is at Almaden Country Club, 6663 Hampton Drive in San Jose. LPAC swimmers must check in with the coaches no later than 7:30 am. The parking lot is reserved for Country Club members; please leave time to find street parking and walk to the pool. Note that there are a few different cabana clubs in this area, so be sure you are going to the right pool! And since space is limited at Almaden, we all need to share EZ-Up space. See the Almaden web page for a map and Meet Entries.
  • If your child is ill on Saturday morning, please call or text Coach Scott: 408-613-5126.

GO PENGUINS!

LPAC Weekly Update: 6/19/17

Dear Penguins and Parents:

Congratulations…we’re now 2-0 after a 125.6 to 116.0 win over Belwood on Saturday! This weekend we have another away meet and will be taking on the Almaden Gators, who won at Champs last year. Please come to practice every day if you can so we can swim our best!

RECORD BREAKERS!

Daniela Fasan is only 15 but already chipping away at the 15-18 Girls records. On Saturday she went :31.71 in the 50 Breast, besting the previous record of :34.55 set by Leah Thompson in 2015.

And our 11-12 boys (C.J. Taylor, Noah Taylor, David Jerez, and Anthony Anderson) set a new record in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:59.15, taking down coach Ryan Hussey’s last remaining record (set in 2001 along with Tim Gardin, Sky Sandberg, and Jordan Aljouny). Congratulations!

WILL YOU BE AT THE MEET ON SATURDAY?

The coaches and volunteer coordinators should already know if your swimmer will be missing any part of the meet this Saturday (6/24) at Almaden. So far the families we know will be missing are: Anderson, Bagoye, Buchanan, Castro, Delgado, DeSantis, Espinoza, Jerez, Katz, Kwende, Nelson, Sunderman, Tang, Thompson, Wise, Wyness.

Don’t forget to sign up for your volunteer shift(s) at SignUp Genius. We’ll have additional details about the meet later this week.

PENGUIN POOL PARTY ON TUESDAY IS POSTPONED

The Penguin Pool Party originally scheduled for this Tuesday (6/20) has been postponed due to the extremely hot weather. We’ll keep you posted when the event has been rescheduled.

CANCER RELAY-A-THON ON FRIDAY

This has been a very tough year for our LPAC family, so we’re channeling our penguin power to do something positive. Please gather pledges and come on Friday (June 23) to swim and cheer at the 25s to Save Lives fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Each practice group will be divided into four relay teams, all swimming as many 25-yard laps as they can in 30 minutes. The more laps your team swims, the more we can raise to help find a cure!

Please note the slightly different practice group times for this day only (high schoolers will get to sleep in a little bit!). We do need at least four parents to stay and help serve as lap counters at each practice. This will be a fun team event for an important cause, and we encourage parents and swimmers to stay and cheer for the other age groups as well. Please collect pledges and share the link to the online donation page with friends and family.

  • High School: 7:45-8:30 am
  • 12-14: 8:30-9:15 am
  • 9-11: 9:00-9:45 am
  • 8 & under: 9:30-10:20 am

RAFT TRIP: DON’T MISS THE BOAT!

We have to pay the raft company this week, but so far don’t have very many signups. If you’re planning to go on the Raft Trip on July 1, please send email ASAP to lpactreasurer@gmail.com and let Julie Webb know how many people will be going in your party. Then complete the form and turn in with payment to the ACTIVITIES folder no later than Friday of this week. Check the website for more details. Remember that everyone who goes on the river must have a signed waiver.

See you all at Belwood…GO PENGUINS!

LPAC: Weekly update (6/12/17)

VIRTUAL REALITY FUN FOR 12-14 AGE GROUP ON WEDNESDAY

Remember, all swimmers in the 12-14 age group are invited for Virtual Reality Fun this Wednesday (June 14) at noon at Santa Clara Paintball. Check the website for more details and don’t forget to complete the online waiver before you go!

DON’T MISS THE BOAT! SIGN UP FOR THE RAFT TRIP NOW

The wet and wild LPAC Raft Trip will be on Saturday, July 1 (there is no swim meet that weekend). We reserve rafts for what is usually a slow, gentle ride down the scenic Stanislaus River. Small rapids add to the excitement, but are tame enough for first-time rafters. Penguins and parents are welcome to join in the fun!

Please note: part of the LPAC tradition includes attacking other boats with water guns and buckets to see who is truly “King of the River.” If you prefer a less intense experience, you can designate your raft as a “dry boat.”

Many families choose to spend the night in Oakdale either Friday or Saturday night (or both) and make it a fun family weekend. We do have a block of rooms reserved at the Motel 6 in Oakdale with a group discounted rate, but you need to make reservations soon.

There are only a limited number of rafts available, so be sure to get your forms and payment in ASAP if you plan to ride the river! See website for more details and a link to download form and waiver.

PENGUIN POOL PARTY NEXT TUESDAY (6/20)

LPAC swimmers of all ages are invited to come enjoy a fun Penguin Pool Party next Tuesday, June 20 from 3-5 pm. This year we’ll have root beer floats and tie-dye too! Please bring a light-colored shirt to tie-dye. The cost is $2 for Association members and $3 for non-members. Please plan to pay at the gate. You do not need to RSVP for this event.

ORDER YOUR CHAMPS PROGRAM AD

Show your penguin pride and place an ad in the VCSL Champs Program! 100% of the proceeds go directly to LPAC, so this is a great way to help support the team while giving a shout-out to your favorite penguins or promoting your business. The cost is $15 for a business card-size ad, $30 for half-page, and $50 for full-page. Use the Champs Ad Order Form to design your own ad, or just email photos and text to Kris Fuss and she can design one for you. Please submit no later than Saturday, July 1.

LOST AND FOUND

On Saturday, there were a few towels, a white South San Jose Academy jersey, and some Rescue Heroes books left behind on the small grass area. Please be sure to check the Lost and Found area if these items belong to you.

  • We really need all families to stay and help clean up after the meet is over. In addition to cleaning up your own area, please help move back the lounge chairs, put away pool equipment, empty garbage cans, etc. It doesn’t take long if everyone pitches in!
  • Morning practices start next week! Please note the practice times:
    • High School: 6:45–7:45/8:15 am*

*Swimmers ages 12 and up have 30 minutes of dryland exercises immediately following their regular practice times on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Please bring running shoes on those days.

See you all bright and early Saturday morning!

LPAC Weekly Update: 6/5/17

Dear Penguins and Parents:

Great job everyone at Time Trials! This week is the last week of night practices — and we have our first dual meet at home against Montevideo on Saturday. Now the fun really begins!

TIME TRIAL MAKE-UPS AT 7:15 TONIGHT

Please note that since the pool is open to members, we have moved Time Trial Make-Ups tonight (Monday 6/5) to 7:15 pm. Please arrive on time and ready to swim, as we have a lot of races to get through before it gets dark. Parents, please stay to help out with timing and recording. Any swimmers who missed any of their races on Saturday should come to Make-Up Time Trials. Everyone else gets the night off from practice!

PRACTICES THIS WEEK

This is the last week of condensed night practices; morning practices will start next week. Please note that some age groups may be doing dryland exercises in addition to swimming during practices this week. Please wear shorts and running shoes over your suit so you’re prepared for either one!

WILL YOU BE AT THE MEET ON SATURDAY?

Remember, if you will be missing a meet, you need to let the coaches and volunteer coordinators know at least one week in advance. So far the only families we know will be missing all or part of this Saturday’s meet (6/10) are: Buchanan, Hocevar Tabuchi, Blacow, Minasian, Espinoza, Morales, and Mamola. Please let us know TODAY if your swimmer will not be there on Saturday!

SATURDAY’S MEET: MONTEVIDEO @ LPAC

We do love swimming in the friendly confines of our home pool, but the downside of having only four racing lanes is that we have to get up pretty early. LPAC swimmers will need to check in with the coaches by 6:30 am on Saturday morning. Please plan to get a good night’s sleep on Friday so you’re ready to swim fast on Saturday!

Parents, if you haven’t already done so, be sure to sign up for your volunteer shift(s) on SignUp Genius. We’ll have more details about the meet in our end-of-the-week reminders.

SAVE THE DATE: CANCER RELAY FUNDRAISER ON JUNE 23

This year the swimmer reps are helping to organize a fun relay event on Friday, June 23 (during regular practice times) to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Sadly, our team has had many families affected by cancer; please plan to participate and help us channel our penguin power into making a difference! More details to follow.
